Weekday Adventures in the Heart of Georgia (8/10-8/13)

This week includes an event for fans of junior detective Nancy Drew, parents who want to know how to help their children learn better, skywatchers, and more. Of note, Storytellers Macon hosts another free night of storytelling at historic Grant's Lounge on Tuesday for those brave enough to tell their own stories to neighbors and friends. The following are just a few of the interesting, entertaining, and often free things to do this week in the heart of Georgia.

MONDAY, August 10th

  >> BOOKS: Nancy Drew Confidential at Washington Memorial Park in Macon (5:30 p.m.)

Readers of the vintage mystery series Nancy Drew, which was ghostwritten by different authors under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene, can attend an event led by Paige Henson on Monday. Henson has been on her own quest to learn everything about the junior detective, and will share some of her findings with attendees. Monday’s event will be the first of three discussions about the long-lasting legacy of Nancy Drew. This family-friendly event series is free to attend.

  >> PARENTING: Parent Partnership: Understanding the Adolescent Brain with Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, PhD, MEd at Mount de Sales Academy in Macon (6 p.m.)

Dr. Horvath is a neuroscientist and educator who will lead a conversation about the effects of technology on young brains, how brains develop, and how students learn during Parent Partnership on Monday evening. Dr. Horvath is the author of The Digital Delusion, which discusses how digital tools used by schools are not beneficial to learning, among other topics. This event is free to attend.

TUESDAY, August 11th

  >> Storytellers Macon presents Top Of My Game with Macon Magazine at Grant’s Lounge in Macon (6:30-8 p.m.)

Storytellers Macon once again returns to historic Grant’s Lounge for a night of true stories on Tuesday. The stories told will revolve around the topic “Top Of My Game.” This storytelling event is held in partnership with Macon Magazine's 5 Under 40 Young Leaders program, and the featured storytellers will include Macon Magazine’s owner and publisher Susannah Cox Maddux and 5 Under 40 recipient Melissa Rodriguez. Audience members are encouraged to sign up to tell their own stories about the evening’s topic as well. This storytelling event is free to attend.

WEDNESDAY, August 12th

  >> SKYWATCHING: Spain Solar Eclipse Live at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon (12-2 p.m.)

Unfortunately, the total solar eclipse taking place this Wednesday won’t be viewable from Middle Georgia except through a live broadcast being shown in the Museum of Arts and Sciences’ auditorium. The Middle Georgia Astronomical Society will also allow visitors to safely view the sun, if the weather permits, and there will also be sun-related activities in the lobby. This event is included in the cost of the museum’s admission.

  >> New Moon Sound Experience at Sacred Journeys Center in Warner Robins (7-9 p.m.)

Take some time for “intention setting, renewal, and inner alignment” at the New Moon Sound Experience on Wednesday. Attendees bring yoga mats, blankets, pillows, water, and anything else to help them relax. Tickets to this event cost $25 online at this link.

THURSDAY, August 13th

  >> HISTORY: Historic Trolley Tour in Milledgeville (10-11 a.m.)

Milledgeville has a long and interesting history, including serving as Georgia's state capital for over 60 years during the Civil War. Middle Georgians can explore the historic city by taking a Historic Trolley Tour Thursdays through Saturdays. This one-hour tour takes visitors around the city to see beautiful architecture and learn more about Milledgeville’s storied past. Tickets for the Historic Trolley Tour cost $15 per person and take place rain or shine.

  >> MUSIC: Phoebe Bridgers Midnight Party at Fresh Produce Records in Macon (11 p.m.)

Phoebe Bridgers, who recently performed in Macon during a surprise concert, is releasing a new album, and her fans will be gathering at Fresh Produce late on Thursday to listen to it. Bridgers’ new album, “Lost Weekend,” is scheduled for release on August 14th. Attendees at this event will have a chance to be among the first to hear the album and possibly win some giveaways. This event is free to attend.

NOTABLE EVENTS THIS WEEKEND:

>> FRIDAY, August 14th-SUNDAY, August 16th: Rigby’s Fine Art Exhibition at Rigby’s Entertainment and Conference Center in Warner Robins (6 p.m.): Rigby’s, in affiliation with the Fine Art Society of Middle Georgia, will present Rigby’s Fine Art Exhibition, a juried fine arts exhibition, this weekend. Over 40 artists and photographers will present their work during this event. A VIP Reception on Friday will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. and costs $45, while Saturday and Sunday admission costs $10. >> SATURDAY, August 15th: The Rich Flip - A Little Richard Beat Battle & Art Experience at the Mill Hill Community Arts Center in Macon (12-8 p.m.): The Rich Flip will pay tribute to Macon’s Little Richard and will feature Ma Dukes, Toney Smith, Shawn J. Period, Boca Floja, Commissioner Stanley Stuart, and Rose Persons, and be hosted by Dumi Right. This event will include hip-hop panels, live producer sets, live performances, awards and closing ceremonies, and more. Artist Kevin “Scene” Lewis will be on scene doing a live painting while “presenting a cultural arts exhibition honoring the life, legacy, and influence of Little Richard..
