PRESS RELEASE: The Long Way Back to Macon: The Wes Herndon Band’s “Better Late”
The Southern blues-rock band releases the title track from its Capricorn-recorded album on September 29.
MACON, Ga. — Wes Herndon spent nearly 30 years away from music. The road back eventually brought him to Macon, a city he had once called home, with a band and eleven songs to record at Capricorn Sound Studios.
The album is called Better Late. On September 29, 2026, WHB releases its title track through Better Late Records: a Southern blues-rock song for anyone who has ever wondered whether they waited too long to do something that mattered.“
Sometimes you don’t really quit the thing,” Herndon said. “You just bury it until it grows stronger.”That’s the feeling behind “Better Late”: being grateful for the life you have lived and still wanting something more from it.
Herndon, on lead vocals and guitar, co-wrote the single with drummer Andy Gray, bassist Tommy Pituch and guitarist Chris Damiano. Their sound draws influence from Southern rock, soul, blues rock and swamp rock blended together around songs shaped by lived experience and a sense of humor.
“Andy, Tommy and Chris definitely add a secret sauce to it that I didn’t have on my own,” Herndon said.
The band recorded the album sessions over three days at Capricorn in April. Jeff Silvey contributed keys to the full album, with Rob Evans engineering, mixing and co-producing the record.“
Fans put some skin in on this record before there was a finished album to hold. Thanks to our people,” Wes continued, “this late in life dream became a reality.”
The complete 11-song album has its official vinyl release September 29, while the title single begins the songs’ individual releases on streaming services. Listeners can hear a preview now at wesherndonofficial.com/music.
The album also includes “Back to Macon.” For Herndon, the connection to the city reaches well beyond the studio. Now based in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, he spent several years of his adult life in Macon and has lifelong ties to Warner Robins and the surrounding Middle Georgia community.
His daughter, Savannah, was born in Macon. She sang backing vocals on two of the album’s tracks and created the LP’s cover art. By the time her dad finally made the record, she had become an essential part of it.
