      ASTRONOMY FORECAST

The second notable meteor shower this month, the June Bootids, will peak on Monday and be active through July 2nd. An unpredictable number of meteors during this event could make for a very memorable show, although it normally produces only a few meteors per hour. This meteor shower occurs when Earth passes through the debris of comet 7P/Pon-Winnecke, which orbits the sun about every 6 years. Ancient civilizations interpreted meteor showers in wildly different ways. Chinese folklore interpreted meteor showers as the tears of a celestial dragon. Norse mythology saw them as sparks from the anvils of dwarves forging weapons for the gods. Ancient Greek peoples believed they were the souls of the departed moving through the heavens. A modern scientific understanding of meteor showers does not lessen their ability to spark wonder and awe at the majesty of the universe we live in.
