ASTRONOMY THIS WEEK
On Sunday, August 9th, depending on the cloud cover, skywatchers can watch as Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun, appears close to the Moon in the constellation Taurus. Mars is a "dusty, cold, desert world with a very thin atmosphere," and also has seasons, polar ice caps, extinct volcanoes, canyons, and weather, according to NASA. Mars was both the god of war and an agricultural guardian in ancient Rome. Festivals were once held for him in March and October, which is traditionally when both farming and military campaigns ended.
