The adventurous in Middle Georgia can enjoy a night of gaming at Heroes & Villains Comics and Games in Warner Robins, live music at a variety of venues in Macon, and much more this week. The Georgia National Fair returns to Perry this Thursday with concerts every night, special events, fair food, rides, and more. The following are just a few of the unique, interesting, and often free things to do this week in the heart of Georgia.


MONDAY, October 5th

  >> GAMING: One Piece Weekly Play at Heroes & Villains Comics and Games in Warner Robins (6-9 p.m.)

Heroes & Villains Comics and Games hosts a One Piece card game every Monday. One Piece is the popular Japanese manga series that follows Monkey D. Luffy and his crew of memorable pirates. Gamers are invited to bring their decks, trade cards, and compete with others for bragging rights. Sign up for events at Heroes & Villains Comics and Games online at this link. TUESDAY, October 6th

  >> MUSIC: Fabian Concert 1 at the Neva Langley Fickling Hall in Macon (7:30 p.m.)

Mercer University’s Townsend School of Music will present Fabian Concert 1 this Tuesday at the Neva Langley Fickling Hall. Performing artists include Eugene Drucker on violin, Lawrence Dutton on viola, Paul Watkins on cello, and the McDuffie Young Artists playing the Bach’s Art of Fugue Duo & Trio selections, Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9, No. 1, and Dvorák’s Sextet Op. 48.   >> ART: 4-Week Beginning Wheel Throwing at stARTup Studios in Macon (5-7 p.m.)

Learn wheel throwing pottery at stARTup Studios’ 4-week beginning Wheel Throwing course starting this Tuesday. This ancient art form can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, and it continues to be a popular pottery technique. The remaining three classes of the course will take place every Tuesday in October. Attendees must be 12 or older to take part in this course.   >> Sidney’s Salon with Author Lonnae O’Neal (“Bibb Country: Unearthing My Family Secrets of Land, Legacy—and Lettuce”) at Longleaf Distillery in Macon (6-7:30 p.m.)

Patrons at Downtown Macon’s Longleaf Distillery will gather to hear the fascinating history of the family of Lonnae O’Neal on Tuesday. O’Neal is the the author of "Bibb Country: Unearthing My Family Secrets of Land, Legacy—and Lettuce". This Sidney's Salon is described by the Historic Macon Foundation as a “mix of memoir, food history, and cultural critique [that] explores what it means to be descended, through enslavement, from a family whose wealth and power helped shape a nation, and confronts the history that echoes through one family’s generations, and, by extension, every generation of America.” Register for this free presentation online at this link.

WEDNESDAY, October 7th

  >> MUSIC: An Evening with Chris Hicks & Donna Hall at The Society Garden in Macon (7 p.m.)

The Marshall Tucker Band’s Chris Hicks and Donna Hall, whose family’s band, Wet Willie, was recently inducted into the Alabama and Georgia Music Halls of Fame, will perform at The Society Garden this Wednesday. Southern rock fans won’t want to miss this show.

  >> Art of Science: Creature Feature at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon (7-8 p.m.)

Creature Features is a family-friendly, entertaining educational event that is part of the Museum of Arts and Sciences lecture performance series “The Art of Science.” While this event is appropriate for all ages, it is specifically for lifelong learners interested in learning about animal sounds in cinema as well as how the animals in real life communicate, from the museum’s Wildlife Curator, Jerrica Madden-Baker. Art of Science: Creature Feature is included with entry into the museum or $5 at the door (and free for museum members).

  >> COMEDY: Off the Rails Comedy Open Mic at stARTup Studios in Macon (8:30-10:30 p.m.)

We all need to laugh, and stARTup Studios Off the Rails Comedy Open Mic is a good place to start. This comedic event takes place on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at a unique art studio and creative space. Host Brock Savage will invite other comedians to entertain a laugh-hungry audience. The Off the Rails Comedy Open Mic is perfect for seasoned comedians or those new to the ancient profession.

THURSDAY, October 8th

  >> Georgia National Fair at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry (10/8-10/18)

The Georgia National Fair returns to Perry this Thursday with lots of tasty fair food, nightly concerts, rides, and special events for livestock enthusiasts, artists, and more every day of the fair. This year’s concert performers include Hanson, Southside Worship, Tucka, Fuel, and others. Tickets to the Georgia National Fair start at $27 for adults and $5 for children 3 to 10 years old.

  >> 8th Annual A Taste for Justice Fundraising Event at Luther Williams Field in Macon (5 p.m.)

A Taste for Justice is Middle Georgia Justice’s annual fundraiser takes place this Thursday at Macon’s historic Luther Williams Field. This fundraising event helps raise money for free civil legal services across Middle Georgia, according to organizers. Guests can dine and drink on a variety of items provided by the ballfield, listen to live music, and enjoy a family-friendly evening of helping Middle Georgia community members in need of representation. Tickets to A Taste for Justice cost $50 per person online at this link.

  >> BIKING: Macon Bike Party: Bikes + Frights Haunted Tour in Downtown Macon (6 p.m.)

A spooky Macon Bike Party will haunt Downtown Macon’s streets this Thursday. Bike Walk Macon’s Bikes + Frights Haunted Tour will slowly ride through town while participants give fellow community members a fright with their creative costumes (which are highly encouraged along with bike decor). This free event from Bike Walk Macon is appropriate for all ages and skills and will meet at Bike Walk Macon’s office on High Street.

  >> Evening of Hope featuring Dale Murphy at the Methodist Children’s Home in Macon (6 p.m.)

Macon's Methodist Home will present its 14th Annual Evening of Hope fundraising dinner this Thursday. Attendees will enjoy a presentation by former Atlanta Braves player Dale Murphy, who played on three National League Teams. The dress code for this donation-based fundraising event is business attire.   >> SATURDAY, October 10th: SHOPPING: Middle Georgia Oddities: Mega Halloween Market at Rigby’s Conference Center in Warner Robins: Rigby’s Conference Center will hold its “biggest market of the year” this Saturday. Shoppers will find unique spooky items from more than 40 vendors inside Rigby’s Conference Center during this free-to-attend event. (2001-A Karl Drive, Warner Robins)


  >> SUNDAY, October 11th: October Second Sunday on Coleman Hill in Macon (6-8 p.m.): Bragg Jam will present another concert in its Second Sunday concert series this Sunday on Downtown Macon’s Coleman Hill. The artist performing at this free, family-friendly event hasn’t been announced yet, but attendees can expect to enjoy live music with family, friends, and neighbors. Tents and grills are not allowed at this concert, but picnics, coolers, lawn chairs, blankets, and toys are.
