PRESS RELEASE: NewTown Macon Opens Historic Bibb Theatre Doors for Open House

MACON, GA -- NewTown Macon invites the community to step inside the historic Bibb Theatre on First Friday, February 6, from 5-7 pm. With construction set to begin in the coming weeks, this drop-in event offers Maconites a final opportunity to step inside the building that has stood vacant for 47 years before it transforms into a vibrant hub for media, tourism, and downtown living.

In September 2018, NewTown Macon purchased the Bibb Theatre in partnership with Peyton Anderson Foundation through a program-related investment (PRI). This forward-thinking strategy will bring downtown's last dormant theatre back to life. After seven years of exploring concepts to re-open this vacant landmark, NewTown Macon will announce plans for the historic theatre’s rehabilitation, bringing it back to its highest and best use.

Renovation plans include returning the building to its 1963 condition, including the beloved marquee, while preserving the historic facade. Visit Macon will relocate The Creek 100.9 and Rock Candy Tours to the first floor, along with a satellite gift shop. Additionally, there will be space for a conference room in the rear of the building, and 10 residential lofts will occupy the upper floors.

"The Bibb Theatre has been a centerpiece of downtown Macon for decades," said NewTown Macon’s President and CEO, James Fritze. "This open house gives our community a final chance to see inside this landmark building before rehabilitation begins."

During the open house, Robins Financial Credit Union will have a tent outside with information about First Friday specials happening throughout downtown.

“Without the vision and the commitment of the Peyton Anderson Foundation, the restoration of our final theatre would not have been possible,” Fritze added. The event is free and open to the public. Stop by to see the building for the final time on Friday, February 6th, from 5-7 pm.
