Fun Things to Do in Middle Georgia this Week

This week there will lots of interesting things to do this week including a free mindfulness meditation session at The Bohemian Den on Monday, a concert from the multi-talented Jill Scott on Thursday, special events in Downtown Macon on Friday for First Friday, and more. Here are just a few of the more unique events taking place in Macon and Middle Georgia.


MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27

Mindfullness Monday Meditation at The Bohemian Den (12 - 12:30 p.m.)

The Bohemian Den features many unique gifts, home decor, and more and now it also hosts a mindfulness meditation session every Monday at noon. This free, thirty minute event will help you to face the rest of the week more calmly and peacefully while relaxing in one of the coolest stores in Macon.

     The Bohemian Den is located at 502 Cherry Street in Macon.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28

Jazz Ensemble “Latin Explosion” at Fickling Hall (7:30 p.m.)

The Mercer University Jazz Ensemble will present a live performance entitled "Latin Explosion" on Tuesday night. This free concert will feature the music of Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, and others.

     Fickling Hall is located in the McCorkle Music Building at 1329 Adams Street in Macon.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1

Macon Recovers presents Movie Matinee (4 - 7 p.m.)

Macon Recovers is a peer-led addiction recovery support center that hosts a movie matinee on Wednesdays. This free event includes popcorn, drinks, a movie, and a chance to meet new people in a supportive environment.

     Macon Recovers is located at 595 Wimbish Road in Macon.

THURSDAY, MARCH 2

Jill Scott at Macon City Auditorium (7:30 - 10 p.m.)

Live Nation is presenting the "Jill Scott: Who is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Vol. 1 23rd Anniversary Tour" at the Macon City Auditorium on Thursday night. Jill Scott is a famous singer, songwriter, model, poet, and actress whose debut album went platinum. There will also be a pre-concert Party on the Plaze starting at 5:30 p.m. with a performance by Cash’s Juke Joint that is free for all ticket holders. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $149.

     The Macon City Auditorium is located at 415 First Street in Macon.

FRIDAY, MARCH 3

Seuss on the Loose in Downtown Macon (5:30 - 7:30 p.m.)

Seuss on the Loose will feature family-friendly crafts, games, and book giveaways. It takes place in NewTown Macon's family fun zone from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Third Street Park as part of the First Friday festivities. UPDATE: Due to inclement weather, Suess on the Loose will now take place in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

Film Screening of “The Big Lebowski” at the Grand Opera House (7 p.m.) (CORRECTION: Does not start at 6 p.m.)

“The Big Lebowski” is a cult hit movie from the Coen brothers that features Jeff Bridges as “The Dude”. This movie is full of twists, turns, and hilarious misadventures involving a kidnapping due to mistaken identity, space bowling, and more. This movie is for mature audiences (“The Big Lebowski” is rated R for profanity, sexuality, and drug content). Tickets are a very reasonable $5.

     The Grand Opera House is located at 651 Mulberry Street in Macon.

March First Friday in Downtown Macon (5:30 - 11:45 p.m.)

The first Friday of every month brings special events to Downtown Macon. For March’s First Friday, The Macon Chamber of Commerce will have their grand opening and open house at their new location at 338 Poplar Street from 3 until 6 p.m. Suess on the Loose will take place in Third Street Park starting at 5:30 p.m. (see above). There will be plenty of delicious food to eat at Downtown Macon's many restaurants includingPearl and Hotel Forty Five’s Loom. 

Finally, music is a huge part of Macon culture and there will be live music performances at multiple venues including the Macon City Auditorium (Casting Crowns will perform at 7 p.m.), the Douglass Theatre (a Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson tribute band will also perform at 7 p.m.), and The Hummingbird (The Shade Trees will perform at 10 p.m.). Reboot Retrocade and Bar will host a free trivia night all about the world of Pokemon for patrons 18 and older starting around 9 p.m. First Fridays are presented by Robins Financial Credit Union.

The Purple Madness returns to The Society Garden (8:30 - 11:30 p.m.)

The Purple Madness is a Prince tribute band that does their best to honor the life and legacy of the multi-talented artist Prince while recreating his sound and performance. The Purple Madness production team consists of singer and performer Bobby Miller along with talented dancers and seasoned musicians. Tickets cost $20.

     The Society Garden is located at 2389 Ingleside Avenue in Macon.

Last First Friday on the Corner Celebration with DJ B3 at JBA (10 p.m.)

JBA will be moving to a new, larger building soon and will be celebrating their last First Friday at their old location this week. DJ B3 (who has done both a Wednesday and Saturday residency at JBA) will perform along with Dark Shadow, JC3, Mr. Spade, 3.Nigma, DJ Uh-Oh, and more. JBA does not have a cover charge.

     JBA is located (for now) at 499 MLK Jr. Boulevard in Macon.

SATURDAY, MARCH 4

ROAD TRIP: Little Critters Day at Fernbank Museum in Atlanta (10 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

This fun, family-friendly event will include baby animals, seasonal crafts and fun activities at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. The museum isn’t very large but includes some hands on exhibits and even an outdoor area where you can hike and learn more about plants and wildlife. General admission tickets are $23.95 for children 3 to 12, $25.95 for those 13 to 64, and $24.95 for seniors 65 and older. Fernbank Museum members will receive free entry to this event.

     Fernbank Museum is located at 767 Clifton Road NE in Atlanta.

Hello Spring Pop-Up Market (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.)

The "Hello, Spring!" Pop-Up Market will feature plants, gardening products, and a chance to meet other people with green thumbs. Johnson's Garden Center will be presenting herbs, hanging baskets, and other items to help gardeners out.

     Hello Spring Pop-Up Market will take place at 592 2nd Street in Macon.

Hello Yellow! Food Truck Frenzy in Forsyth (11 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

This free, family-friendly event will include lots of food, activities for kids, and car painting in preparation for the upcoming 36th annual Forsythia Festival. The Forsythia Festival takes place on March 11th and 12th and includes an arts and craft show, 5K run, sporting tournament and more.

     Monroe County Fine Arts Center is located at 27 Brooklyn Avenue in Forsyth.

Fiddlin’ Folk Art Fest at The Society Garden (12 p.m. - 12 a.m.)

The Fiddlin’ Folk Art Fest is a folk art festival that takes place Saturday at The Society Garden. Attendees will be able to listen to folk music and meet folk artists from around the state at their booths where they will be selling their artwork. There will also be food trucks for when you get hungry for more than good music and art. Starting at 2 p.m. the Atlanta band Rolling Nowhere will perform (they have been described as a Junkyard Folk band, according to The Society Garden). Then at 3:45 p.m. the band Little Country Giants is scheduled to perform. At 5:30 p.m. the band Georgia Crackers will perform (this band seeks to recreate the sound of folk music from the 1920s). Then at 7:15 p.m. Abe Partridge starts his set: The Society Garden describes Abe Partridge as “like a prodigy of Townes, Guy and Rodney”. At 8:30 p.m. the band Chattanooga Dogs from Ringgold, Georgia takes the stage. Finally, at 10:00 p.m. the band Russel Cook and the Sweet Teeth serves up what The Society Garden describes as “electrified Americana”. Tickets to the Fiddlin’ Folk Art Fest cost $20.

The Dave Matthews Tribute Band at Hargray Capitol Theatre (8 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.)

The Dave Matthews Tribute Band has been performing around the world for almost 20 years, including in 46 U.S. states and 8 different countries. This 5-piece band seeks to create the Dave Matthews concert experience for audience members. Ticket prices start at $15.

     Hargray Capitol Theatre is located at 382 2nd Street in Macon.

SUNDAY, MARCH 5

SSLA Hillbilly Llama Show in Perry (8 a.m.)

Fancy llamas will compete and be shown off during this unique three day event. The Hillbilly Llama Show takes place from Friday through Sunday and starts at 8 a.m. each day. The Hillbilly Llama Show is free to attend.

     The Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter is located at  401 Larry Walker Parkway in Perry.
