This week in Middle Georgia, the adventurous can take a trip back in time through your imagination to an '80s roller skating rink, enjoy an evening of true stories at historic Grant's Lounge, listen to live music from local talents and from the hollers of Appalachia, and so much more. The following are just a few of the fun, unique, and often free, things to do from Monday, October 13th, through Thursday, October 16th.
MONDAY, October 13th
Retro Skating Party at Rigby’s Entertainment Complex (1:30-3:30 p.m.)
You can travel back in time (kind of) on Monday for an evening of skating to the energetic sound of disco and other '80s adjacent music. This unique skating event is brought to you by the Warner Robins Retro Rollers Club. This group was created for skaters 50 and over but anyone is invited to get groovy at the Retro Skating Party on Monday. The Warner Robins Retros Rollers Club hosts Retro Skating Parkties every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon through Friday, October 31st. Members can skate for only $8 (which includes rental skates).

Fly Fishing Class at Bass Pro Shop (5:30 p.m.)
Fishmacon will be presenting a Fly Fishing Class at Bass Pro Shop on Monday. Fly fishing is an angling technique that uses lightweight artificial flies that mimic small insects and requires special equipment and skills. This Fly Fishing Class is free to attend.

TUESDAY, October 14th
Storytellers Macon and the Middle Georgia Derby Demons present “Whip It” at Grant’s Lounge (6:30-8:30 p.m.)
Storytellers Macon will bring another night of true stories to historic Grant’s Lounge on Tuesday night, this time with help from friends from the Middle Georgia Derby Demons (MGDD). MGDD’s Rachel Podwolsky (Rocky Ballbasher) will be the featured storyteller who will talk about “those moments when life propels you forward,” sometimes in not very gentle ways. As always at these events, which take place the second Tuesday of every month, audience members can also tell their own 5-minute true stories related to the evening’s theme. These events are encouraged for mature audiences since the stories are not censored. Storytellers Macon’s “Whip It” is free and open to the public.

WEDNESDAY, October 15th
Fall Fest at Just Tap’d (5-8 p.m.)
Fall Fest at Just Tap’d will feature local vendors selling items like fall floral bouquets and permanent jewelry. Just Tap’s will also be serving tasty Pumpkin Spice dough-knots as well as Mini Dixie Donut Flights, which are four mini donuts paired with wine, according to Just Tap’d. Fall Fest is free to attend.

Loving Arms Family Support’s Central Georgia Wave of Light (7-7:30 p.m.)
Wave of Light is an event for parents who have lost a baby. Attendees at Loving Arms Family Support will receive candles and a way to commemorate that child’s name. Those who can’t attend in person can share a photo or put the baby’s name in the comments online. RSVP for Wave of Light at this link. This community event is free to attend.

THURSDAY, October 16th
MUSIC: Third Thursday featuring Dr. Stephen Darlington at St. Joseph Catholic Church (12:30 p.m.)
St. Joseph Catholic Church will host another concert in its Third Thursday concert series this Thursday with the United Kingdom’s Dr. Steven Darlington. Dr. Darlington is one of the United Kingdom’s leading choral conductors, according to St. Joseph Catholic Church. This concert is free and open to the public.

Wine in the Woods at Lockerly Arboretum (5-7 p.m.)
Milledgeville Baldwin County Allied Arts’s invites you to take a walk in the cool fall air at Lockerly Arboretum. Guests will walk through Lockerly Arboretum’s historic grounds, which include a Greek Revival home, Rose Hill, built in 1852. They will also get a chance to view a Fairy House exhibit by the Boys & Girls Club of Milledgeville. This unique event is for adults 21 and older. Tickets to Wine in the Woods cost $30 and can be purchased online at this link.

FOOD: October Food Truck Roundup and Trunk or Treat at Perkins Field (5-9 p.m.)
The October Food Truck Roundup and Trunk or Treat feature will include food trucks, a Zombie Zone where you can fight the undead in something called Zombie Gellyball, a live DJ, and trick-or-treating on Mulberry Street and Young Avenue from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Costumes are highly recommended for this free, family-friendly community event.

Storytellers Macon and Angel-headed Hipsters present “Cognitive Dissonance” at Vice Bar (6 p.m.)
Cognitive Dissonance is an evening of original music along with spoken word from Storytellers Macon and Angel-headed Hipster Press. The theme for the evening will be cognitive dissonance, which is “the tension between belief and expression.” The featured musicians and writers include DJ and Emcee Sky Griffin, m.e. Salmon, Richard Anderson, Jak the Act, Garry Ballard, Bob & Blender, Yolanda Lattimore, Becky Sandoz and Russ Hearst, Jamie Helms, Justin Cutway, Bryant Perez, Rowdy Solomon, and Brent Thomason. Afterward, guests can take part in open mic performances related to cognitive dissonance. This event is free and open to the public.

MUSIC: Hunter Flanagan at Parish on Cherry St. (6-9 p.m.)
Hunter Flanagan will be performing for diners at Parish on Cherry St. this Thursday. Flanagan is an actor and singer who has received the Georgia Country Awards Overall Artist of the Year Award from 2019 through 2022.

MUSIC: Nest of Singing Birds at Capricorn Sound Studios (7 p.m.)
Nest of Singing Birds is a band from North Carolina that sings Appalachian ballads about subjects like love, murder, and climate change. Attendees will experience an authentic Appalachian ballad swap, where the musicians will share/swap songs that have been passed down from their ancestors. Tickets to see Nest of Singing Birds perform cost $29.86 online at this link.
