Adventurers can become a DJ for a night, learn more about Macon's newest public spaces, eat delicious food, practice comedy, and more during this week. stARTup Studios is bringing Open Mic Comedy back on Wednesday, while artist Rhonda "Sunshine" Miller will present a pop-up exhibit of her beautiful artwork at Lore Gallery on Wednesday and Thursday. The following events are just a few of the interesting, community-based, and often free things to do this week in the heart of Georgia.


MONDAY, May 18th

  >> MUSIC: Open Decks with DJ B3 on $3 Mondays at Friends on the HILL in Warner Robins (8-11:50 p.m.)

Middle Georgia’s DJ B3 hosts open decks at Friends on the Hill in Warner Robins on $3 Mondays every week. Local DJs can step up and perform a 20 to 30-minute set for other patrons, while enjoying drink specials for $3. All genres of music are welcome, according to the venue. There is no cover charge for this 21 and up event.

  >> TRIVIA: Trivia at Ocmulgee Brewpub in Macon (7-9 p.m.)

Trivia Zone presents an all-ages trivia event at Ocmulgee Brewpub on Mondays of each week. The top three teams receive prizes for their braininess. There is no cover charge for this trivia event.

TUESDAY, May 19th

  >> Bike Walk Macon’s Walk ’n’ Talk: Public Spaces Walk with Margaret Peth at Third Street Park in Macon (1-3 p.m.)

Bike Walk Macon presents another Walk ’n’ Talk event this Tuesday. Margaret Peth will be the guide during this walk. Peth is an urban planner and community activist who works with the Urban Development Authority and Reimagining Civic Commons. This walking tour will start at Third Street Park and cover “Macon’s newest and upcoming public spaces,” including pedestrian and bike improvements. This family-friendly event is free to attend.

  >> FOOD: Cookbook Club - Small Bites Edition at Bear’s Books in Macon (6 p.m.)

Bear’s Books hosts the unique Cookbook Club, inviting cookbook readers and foodies to “share meals, stories, and kitchen shenanigans.” Before the event, attendees pick a recipe to share during the potluck-style gathering at the bookstore. During the Small Bites Edition of this cookbook club, “popular meals and snacks are transformed into down-sized one-bite wonders that are big on presentation as well as bold in taste,” according to Bear’s Books. WEDNESDAY, May 20th

  >> FOOD: Poplar Street Farmers’ Market in Macon (3-6 p.m.)

On Wednesdays, Middle Georgians can choose to cut out the middlemen and buy straight from Dickey Farms and others during e. Poplar Street Farmers Market. This rain or shine farmers’ market runs through July 29th and features vendors selling fresh produce, plants, meat, eggs, artisanal goods, and more.

  >> ART: Pop-up Exhibit of the Art of Rhonda "Sunshine" Miller at the Lore Gallery (5/20-5/21) (5-7 p.m.)

The self-trained multimedia artist Rhonda "Sunshine" Miller will present a pop-up exhibit at Downtown Macon's Lore Gallery on Wednesday and Thursday (2-6 p.m.) this week. Miller's journey as an artist began as therapy and now brings joy to her fans who live all across the world. There is no charge to attend either day of the pop-up exhibit.

  >> MUSIC: Tres Hombres, Lizella Reign, Shelly Palman, and Big Mike & the Booty Papas at Coop Jam II: A Music Benefit for Tony Cooper at The Society Garden in Macon (6 p.m.)

Tres Hombres, Lizella Reign, Shelly Palman, and Big Mike & the Booty Papas will perform at Coop Jam II, which will help raise funds for the expensive medical treatment of musician Tony Cooper at The Society Garden this Wednesday. Tony Cooper is also an educator and music arranger who has played with local bands, along with well-known acts like the Marshall Tucker Band, and is beloved by many in Middle Georgia. Patrons can take part in a raffle and a silent auction, with proceeds benefiting Cooper. Doors open at 5 p.m. There is no cover charge for this family-friendly event.

  >> COMEDY: Comedy Open Mic at stARTup Studios in Macon (9-11 p.m.)

Comedy returns to Downtown Macon’s stARTup Studios starting this Wednesday, and continuing on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. Brock Savage will host this Comedy Open Mic, and funny people who can sign up at the door for a chance to make their friends and neighbors laugh. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the comedy begins at 9 p.m. There is no cover charge for this event.

THURSDAY, May 21st

  >> How to Develop a Closed Loop Farming System at Comfort Farms in Milledgeville (10 a.m.-2 p.m.)

Learn about developing a Closed Loop Farming System, which turns things like crop residues, manure, wastewater nutrients, and even heat into inputs that can help plants grow and thrive, at Milledgeville’s Comfort Farms this Thursday. Farmer Jon Jackson will lead this class, beginning with a tour of the farm. Comfort Farms is a nonprofit organization that provides therapy to veterans with PTSD and other disabilities.
