[The following is from a press release by the Booker T. Washington Community Center]

Join us for a fun read-aloud! Make your own kazoos and play in the Kids' Kazoo Concert!

The two books we'll read aloud (projected onto a tv screen) are: Orchestra of Hope, about a "landfill orchestra" of Paraguay--a kids' orchestra organized by Fabio Chavez, where they made instruments entirely from trash, as they were poor and lived near the landfill. It became famous; and Ava's Violin, about one girl in the orchestra who later went on to play professionally.

Join the Booker T Washington Center on January 29, with special guests, Author Gillian Neimark, Dr. Gloria Cisse, Rodney Mason (Restored Roots), Rhonda Sunshine Miller (artist) and Stephen Chanin (drummer)

Then we will have a few demonstrations. Rodney Mason will play his "fish box" drum-modelled after the fish boxes Tunisians converted to drums when deprived of their own drums. He'll talk for a few minutes about that as well. drummer, Stephen Chanin, will bring gourds and other instruments made from 'found' objects and talk a bit.

Finally, the kids will get to make their own kazoos from colored cardboard tubes and wax paper and then we'll have a big raucous "concert" together with kazoos, drums, triangles, tambourines, shakers and more! And Visit Macon will be there on site with a special display table and purple kazoos to give out.
