Adventures in the Heart of Georgia: Things to Do this Weekend in Macon and Greater Middle Georgia

The end of February and beginning of March will be full of adventures. Events this weekend include two hockey games with the Ocmulgee River Monsters, live music from jazz to psychedelic rock, and much more. The following are just a few of the fun, unique, and often free things to do this weekend in the heart of Georgia.


FRIDAY, February 27th

  >> HOCKEY: Beach Night at the Ocmulgee River Monsters vs. Fayetteville Marksmen Game on Beach Night in the Macon Coliseum (7 p.m.)

Hockey fans are encouraged to dress in “flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts” during Beach Night on Friday. The Macon Mayhem will be playing under an alternative identity as the Ocmulgee River Monsters. If you can’t make to Friday’s game, or you just really like the electric energy at hockey games, there will be another game on Saturday against the same opponents and starting at 6 p.m. Tickets to either hockey game starts at $17.35 online.

  >> 22nd Annual Pig in the Park Festival at Dublin’s Market on Madison (2/27-2/28) (7-10 p.m.)

Downtown Dublin will be celebrating the 22nd Annual Pig in the Park festival this Friday and Saturday. Peyton Chambliss and the Backshift, opening for Will Moseley, will provide live music entertainment on Friday. There will be a BBQ competition and a kids’ zone. There will also be local vendors and food trucks at this family-friendly event. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and coolers. Pig in the Park is free and open to the public.

  >> MUSIC: Clint Black: Back On The Blacktop Tour at the Macon City Auditorium (7 p.m.)

Country music singer, songwriter, actor, and record producer Clint Patrick Black will perform at the Macon City Auditorium on Friday evening. Black’s debut album, “Killin’ Time, brought him 4 number one singles in a row on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts. Tickets to see Clint Black in concert start at $48.50 online.

  >> MUSIC: Ashes at Grant’s Lounge (9 p.m.)

Rock and rollers Ashes is a band from Macon who will be playing at one of the most iconic music venues in Macon, Grant’s Lounge, on Friday night. Tickets cost $10 at the door.

  >> MUSIC: Edgewood Heavy at The Hummingbird (9:30 p.m.-1 a.m.)

Edgewood Heavy is a rock band from Atlanta that will perform at The Hummingbird early into Sunday morning. The band mixes modern soul with psychedelic rock to create a unique sound. The Hummingbird will charge a cover of $5 for this show.

SATURDAY, February 28th

  >> Winter Bassin’ on Lake Tobesofkee at Claystone Park (8 a.m.-2 p.m.)

Winter Bassin’ on Lake Tobesofkee is part of the Houston County Student Bass Angler Tournament series, presented by The Links Academy, Chris King Memorial, Sportscenter, and Ms. Toad’s Depot. The students who will be fishing in this tournament are from approved Houston County public middle schools. Takeoff begins at 9 a.m. and the weigh-in starts at 2 p.m.

  >> DANCE: Kali Dance Studio for the Arts presents A Legacy That Moves: Past - Present - Future at The Douglass Theatre (3-5 p.m.)

The Kali Dance Studio will present A Legacy That Moves: Past - Present - Future this Saturday at the historic Douglass Theatre. This performance will be a Black History celebration through dance, culture, and storytelling, according to the dance studio. Tickets for adults cost $25, while tickets for kids 4 and over are $20, and kids 3 and under get in free.

  >> MUSIC: Bands at the Grand Honor Band Festival: Middle and High School Honor Bands Performance at The Piedmont Grand Opera House (2/27-2/28) (3 p.m.)

This Saturday, Mercer University’s Townsend School of Music presents the finale of the university’s Wind Ensemble’s Bands at the Grand Honor Band Festival. The festival will include performances from Middle and High School honor bands from around Georgia. The guest conductor for the Middle School Honor Band will be Dr. MJ Robinson, the director at Elkhart High School in Elkhart, Indiana. Dr. Ben Blasko, director of bands at Bethel University, will be the guest conductor for the High School Honor Band. This musical event is free and open to the public.

  >> RACING: Rogers-Dabbs Performance Parts Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Series Showdown at the Cochran Motor Speedway (6 p.m.)

The newly renovated Cochran Motor Speedway will host a $4,000 to-win showdown this Saturday. The hosting race track is a 3/8th mile dirt track, which offers racing on Saturdays from April until October. This racing event is presented by Crate Racin’ USA.

  >> Night at the Museum at the Hay House (6:30-10 p.m.)

Players from Theatre Macon and the talented musicians who make up the Macon Pops will present Night at the Museum this Saturday evening. Theatre Macon will present theatrical performances, breathing new life into select Hay House collection pieces. The dress code for Night at the Museum is cocktail attire, with black tie optional. Tickets for this 21 and up event from The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation cost $125 per person.

SUNDAY, March 1st

  >> Fresh Produce Shootout (9:30 a.m.)

Photographers and models will be taking over Fresh Produce Records in Downtown Macon, capturing compelling images for lookbooks and portfolios. Payment by CashApp is preferred. The price for tickets for the Fresh Produce Shootout cost $40, with space limited to 10 models and photographers.

  >> YOGA: Sunday Slow Flow (3:45-5 p.m.)

Empowering Peace Yoga & Wellness will offer a Sunday Slow Flow yoga class at Downtown Macon’s Rose Room this Sunday. Doors open at 3:30 p.m., followed by meditation and journaling at 3:45 p.m., and yoga practice starts at 4 p.m. A social hour, which includes on drink of the yogi’s choice, begins at 5 p.m. The Sunday Slow Flow cost $35 online.

  >> MUSIC: Hot Club Jazz Fellowship with Organist Matthew Kaminski at the First United Methodist Church (3 p.m.)

Atlanta Braves’ fans will be familiar with some of organist Matthew Kaminski’s music, as he has been the official organist for the team since 2009. The Hot Club Jazz Fellowship will present “Parisian-style jazz standards, Django Reinhardt, and Edith Piaf songs, romantic ballads, and waltzes, according to the organizers. Tickets to the Hot Club Jazz Fellowship cost $18 online.

  >> Thursday, March 5th through Saturday, March 7th, 7 p.m.: Bike Walk Macon’s Streets For All Fest. Starting with “Biking But Make It Fashion” Ride & Party on Thursday, and featuring three special events on Friday, and a full day of events on Saturday. Most events that are part of this family-friendly event are free.


  >> Friday, March 6th, 7-11 p.m.: Fall Line Brewing’s Art After Dark. An art unique festival at night with live glass blowing, a live DJ, glow-in-the-dark artists and vendors, fire performers, the Glow Roll with Bike Tech Macon, and more. Art After Dark is free to attend.


  >> Saturday, March 7th, 12 p.m.: Perry’s International Festival. This family-friendly festival features dancing, food, and vendors selling a wide variety of items like clothing, food, and gifts. Perry’s International Festival is free and open to the public.
