ASTRONOMY THIS WEEK: Only four eclipses take place in 2026, and two different types of eclipses occur in August. This Thursday, August 27th, and into the early morning hours of Friday, August 28th, skywatchers can watch a dramatic partial lunar eclipse when Earth's shadow covers up to 96% of the lunar disk, according to Wired. Unlike the total solar eclipse on August 12th, the eclipse on Thursday will be visible from many places on the planet. Macon and Middle Georgia residents can start watching at 9:23 p.m., when the penumbral eclipse begins (in other words, when Earth's shadow touches the edge of the Moon). At 10:33 p.m., the partial eclipse begins and, finally, at 12 a.m., skywatchers can view the maximum eclipse, which is when the Moon is closest to the center of the shadow, according to timeanddate.com. The best way to view the eclipse is to find an area with clear skies and limited light pollution. Many cultures throughout time have treated eclipses as sacred times, and at the very least, they remind us of the cyclical nature of our universe.
