Fun Things to Do this Week in the Heart of Georgia

This week in the heart of Georgia there will be plenty of fun, and free, events to enjoy, including two community bike rides with Bike Walk Macon, ABBA and Prince tribute band concerts, the Macon Mural Festival, and the thirty-second annual Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration. The following are just a few of the fun adventures to be had this week in Middle Georgia.

MONDAY, September 9th

Georgia College & State University’s Department of Music Allen Duo Faculty Recital in Milledgeville (7:30 p.m.)

The Allen Duo is made up of Georgia College & State University faculty members Andrew J. Allen and Elise Naber Allen and they will be performing flute and saxophone duets and compositions for solo instruments and electronics at this concert (which will also be livestreamed online at this link). Donations of $5 are encouraged and all proceeds will benefit the college’s Department of Music.


TUESDAY, September 10th

Macon Area Connections (MAC): Mingle with Singles at Hotel Forty Five (6 p.m.)

The Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce invites professional singles in Middle Georgia to meet for an evening of networking at Downtown Macon’s Hotel Forty Five on Tuesday evening. Suggested ages for attendees are 21 to 45 years of age. Tickets to this networking event cost $20 online at this link.

Storytellers Macon presents “How I Paid the Bills” (6:30-8:30 p.m.)

Another evening of interesting storytelling will take place on the stage at Grant’s Lounge this Tuesday with Storytellers Macon. The theme for the stories will be “How I Paid the Bills” and anyone can get up and tell a true, five-minute story somehow related to the theme. The featured storyteller for the evening will be Emily Hopkins, the Vice President of External Affairs and Main Street Manager with NewTown Macon. This event is free and open to the public and the stories are uncensored so children might not be the best audience for these events, which take place on the second Tuesday of every month.

WEDNESDAY, September 11th

Second Annual Trap ’n Paint with DJ B3 at the Society Garden (8-10 p.m.)

The second annual Trap ’n Pain will take place at The Society Garden this Wednesday. DJ B3 will be providing the music and the venue will be serving up drink specials for the occasion. General admission tickets to Trap ’n Paint cost $20 on eventbrite.com or at the gate.

THURSDAY, September 12th

Pints for a Purpose at Fall Line Brewing Co. (5-8 p.m.)

When guests at Fall Line Brewing mention the People & Pets Project when paying their bills this Thursday, Fall Line Brewing Co. will donate money to the organization. The People & Pets Project is a nonprofit that assists pet owners with the health needs of their pets as well as for themselves.

Macon Bike Party: Summer Send-Off Social Ride (6-8 p.m.)

This event invites you to wear your most colorful Hawaiian shirts and take a free, “slow-paced community bicycle ride” through Downtown Macon while saying goodbye to summer. The Macon Bike Party is perfect for all ages and starts and at Bike Walk Macon’s office and ends at The Rose Room. Registration starts at 6 p.m. and the race starts at 6:15 p.m.

Macon’s Adult Spelling Bee at Yollah (6:30 p.m.)

This unique event encourages adults to take part in a little friendly spelling competition while helping raise funds for Centenary Community Ministries, Inc., which works to prevent homelessness in Macon. Registration for Macon’s Adult Spelling Bee costs $35 at this link.

FRIDAY, September 13th

Macon Arts Alliance’s Macon Mural Festival Begins

Macon Arts Alliance’s three-day-long Macon Mural Festival returns this weekend and will feature muralists painting large-scale artworks at different locations around Downtown Macon. On Friday, Middle Georgians are invited to walk around downtown to watch the artists work. On Saturday, the artists will continue working on their creations and you can meet the artists at a free Mural Celebration Party (details will be announced later by the Macon Arts Alliance). Then, the murals will be completed and ready for admiration on Sunday.

From Ocmulgee to Okmulgee September Opening and Artist Talk at the McEachern Art Center (5 p.m.)

Mercer University’s McEachern Art Center (The MAC) will present artist talks from three Muscogee (Creek) artists, Johnnie Diacon, Kenneth Johnson, and Jamie Bennett, this Friday. This art show is taking place in conjunction with the return of the Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration on Saturday and Sunday.

ROAD TRIP: Dancing Dream: ABBA Tribute Band in Madison (7:30-10 p.m.)

Dancing Dream is an ABBA tribute band that will be performing the band's hits like “Mamma Mia”, “Dancing Queen”, and “SOS” at this concert on Friday night. General admission tickets for this show cost $35 online at this link.

“On The Far End” by Mary Kathryn Nagle at Theatre Macon (8 p.m.)

“On The Far End” is a one-woman play written by Cherokee playwright Mary Kathryn Nagle. The play tells the true story of Jean Hill Chaudhuri, whose devotion to her community led to the leading of a health clinic in Tucson, Arizona. Chaudhuri also wrote a musical comedy and a one-woman play titled “Four Seasons of an Indian Woman’s Life”, according to the Wikipedia article about her life. This event is free and open to the public.

SATURDAY, September 14th

Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration Group Ride (9:30 a.m.)

Bike Walk Macon and the Ocmulgee Mounds Association will present a group ride that will end at the Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration on Saturday. This unique bike-riding event is free and open to the public and will begin at Macon Bagels (and participants will need a helmet to take part in the group ride).

VENUE CHANGE: Picnic in the Park Food Truck Festival at the Macon State Farmers Market (11 a.m.-4 p.m.)

T-Luv Todd Davis will host this food truck festival on Saturday. Attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs, pop-up tents, and picnic blankets to get comfortable during this family-friendly event.

Just Tap’d 10th Anniversary Celebration (12 p.m.)

Just Tap’d is celebrating ten years of serving cold drinks and presenting unique events in Macon this Saturday. The anniversary party will include flights of four cake pops from Annie’s Oven, paired with a Just Tap’d beverage of course, live music from The Lassetters and Conner Henderson from 6 to 9 p.m., birthday cake mimosas, dog birthday cakes, and more. This celebratory event is free to attend.

Flowing Florals Acrylic Painting Class at Artspace Macon (6-8 p.m.)

Flowering artists will appreciate this class where they will learn techniques to create colorful artworks that “celebrate autumn vibes, leaves, and all the beauty of the season together” from the talented Casie Trace. Participants will be able to create an 8”x10” canvas for $30 and a 16”x10” canvas for $45.

Jazz at the Magnolia Ballroom in Milledgeville (7:30 p.m.)

The sixth annual Jazz at the Magnolia will feature trombonist Bill Gibson and support the Allied Arts and Georgia College and State University’s programming and scholarships. Tickets to Jazz at the Magnolia Ballroom cost $21 at this link and include refreshments.

SUNDAY, September 15th

32nd Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration at the Ocmulgee Mounds (10 a.m.-5 p.m.)

The 32nd Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration will take place this Saturday and Sunday and include cultural dances, storytelling, live music, art, and more, according to the Ocmulgee Mounds Association. The event this year will be especially exciting and larger than most such events because it is expected that the park will one day soon become one of the newest National Parks in the United States. This family-friendly event is free to attend and free parking is offsite.
