Fun and Interesting Things to Do in Middle Georgia this Week

This week in the heart of Georgia, the Macon Film Festival returns on Thursday with special screenings at venues like the historic Douglas Theatre as well as the huge planetarium dome at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. Storytellers Macon will have another evening of storytelling at Grant's on Tuesday and there are plenty of other things to do for the adventurous. The following are just a few of the events scheduled to take place the week of August 12th through 18th.


MONDAY, August 12th

WIC Farmers Market - Macon-Bibb County Health Department (9 a.m.-1 p.m.)

This farmers market will take place every day through Friday this week and feature plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables both for WIC participants and the general public. WIC participants will receive items for free but produce is limited.

TUESDAY, August 13th

Storytellers Macon presents “Lies My Teacher Told Me” at Grant’s Lounge (6:30-8:30 p.m.)

Storytellers Macon is back with another evening of storytelling, this time with a theme of lies that teachers have told, either as a lesson or a way to keep the kids in line. This event is free and open to the public who can also sign up to tell their five-minute, true stories for other Middle Georgians.

WEDNESDAY, August 14th

Walking Wednesdays at Lockerly Arboretum in Milledgeville (7 a.m.)

The Lockerly Arboretum is a fifty-acre, nonprofit arboretum, where every Wednesday through the end of the year walkers gather to enjoy nature in the morning (and coffee from the LEC/Morning Grind coffee truck starting at 7:30 a.m.). An arboretum is a place where many varieties of trees are grown for research as well as educational and ornamental reasons, according to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. Lockerly Arboretum is free and open to the public.

THURSDAY, August 15th

Fall Kick-Off Event at 7th Street Salvage (10 a.m.-4 p.m.)

If you are the kind of person who is already planning on wearing big sweaters and cozy hats while temperatures are still hitting the 90s, this event is for you. 7th Street Salvage will be selling “pump-cans, wooden boos, and fall candle line” starting on Thursday and running through Saturday this week.

Food Truck Roundup at Perkins Ball Field in Warner Robins (5-9 p.m.)

The theme for the Food Truck Roundup this Thursday will be Wild West food. There are expected to be over twenty-five food trucks as well as a Kids Zone. Food Truck Roundups are free to attend.

Taps & Takedowns Live Wrestling at Fall Line Brewing Co. (6:30 p.m.)

The Phoenix Wrestling Experience is bringing live wrestling to Fall Line Brewing Co. this Thursday. A portion of the proceeds from this all-ages wrestling event will go towards supporting Bragg Jam. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and there will be giveaway prizes as well as photo opportunities. Tickets start at $10 on eventbrite.com.

Macon Film Festival 2024 Opening Night Special Screening of “Red Fever” at The Douglas Theatre (7:15 p.m.)

The Macon Film Festival is partnering with the Fire Starters Film Festival for the international premiere screening of the movie “Red Fever”. This documentary is directed by Catherine Bainbridge and Neil Diamond, who is Cree. The film examines why Native American culture is so fascinating to many non-natives as reflected in Western culture and identity. After the screening, there will also be an opening night after-party at the McEachern Art Center, where the “From Ocmulgee to Okmulgee” art exhibit will open. This exhibit is free and open to the public and will feature artworks from Muscogee (Creek) artists Jamie Bennett, Johnnie Diacon, and Kenneth Johnson with food, an open bar, and a DJ. FRIDAY, AUGUST 9th

Vintage Market Days presents “My Favorite Color is Vintage” at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry (10 a.m.-4 p.m.)

Interior designers, decorators, and more than seventy-five vintage and antique goods dealers will be selling items like clothing, jewelry, plants, food, and more at Vintage Market Days “My Favorite Color is Vintage”. You will be able to shop inside and away from the unrelenting heat of the August sun from Friday through Sunday (10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday) Children 12 and under get in free of charge and tickets start at $3.75 and can be purchased online at this link.

What the Funk?! with Macon Pops at Hawkins Arena (7:30 p.m.)

Macon Pops is going to get funky at Hawkins Arena this Friday with “What the Funk?!” There will be a full cash bar and plenty of room to dance. Tickets for this show cost $27.50 for bleacher seats, $44 for table seating, or $55 for premium table seating and can be purchased on tixr.com.

Direwoof at Grant’s Lounge (9:15 p.m.)

DireWoof will again take the stage at historic Grant’s this Friday night. This band celebrates the music of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead and is known for giving riveting performances all around Middle Georgia. The doors open at 8 p.m. and the groovy music starts at 9 p.m. Tickets to see Direwoof perform are $10 in advance at this link or at the door.

SATURDAY, August 16th

ROAD TRIP: Piedmont Park Arts Festival in Atlanta (10 a.m.-5 p.m.)

The Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces is presenting the 14th Annual Piedmont Park Arts Festival from Saturday through Sunday this week. There are expected to be over two hundred and fifty local and regional artisans and craftsmen as well as live music, children’s area, and food and beverage concessions (including some fancy “gourmet” food trucks). This event is also free and open to the public.

Art Night: Mushrooms & Magic at Artspace Macon (6:30-8:30 p.m.)

This unique event is for artists who want to art with other creatives and will be especially enjoyed by those who appreciate the style of “cottage core” (an aesthetic/design style to celebrates and idealizes a simpler lifestyle). You will be able to work on an 8x8 or 8x10 canvas with collage materials, paint pens, stencils, and more. Tickets to Artspace Macon’s “Mushrooms & Magic” cost $25 per person.

Macon Film Festival 2024 Saturday Night Special Screening of “The South Got Something to Say” at The Douglas Theatre (7:30-9:45 p.m.)

“The South Got Something to Say”, the first film from the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s AJC Films label, will be screened at The Douglass Theatre this Saturday as part of the annual Macon Film Festival. This film is a feature-length documentary about Atlanta’s hip-hop scene, and how music has shaped the culture there. The documentary’s directors, Ryon Horne and Tyson Horne, as well as its writer, Byron Horne, are expected to be there for this screening and will take questions afterward. Swamp Dogg at Grant’s Lounge (9 p.m.)

The country, soul, and rhythm and blues musician Swamp Dogg, who has been performing under this iconic name since 1970, will be performing at the official Macon Film Festival Afterparty along with special guest Wolf and Friends. The documentary "Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted" will be screened during the festival. Tickets to see Swamp Dogg at Grant’s Lounge cost $25 at the door or online.

SUNDAY, August 17th

Macon Film Festival 2024 Sunday Night Special Screening of HBO’s “Stax Soulsville U.S.A.” (7:45 p.m.)

The Macon Film Festival’s closing special screening this year will feature the first two episodes of the documentary series “Stax Soulsvile U.S.A.” This documentary tells the story of Memphis, Tennessee’s Stax Records which helped launch the careers of iconic musical acts like Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & The M.G.’s, and Sam & Dave.
