PRESS RELEASE: "Freedom Seekers" is a new exhibit at the Tubman Museum featuring ads in the Macon Telegraph about runaway slaves and others that opens on Sunday, January 26th

"Freedom Seekers" is an exhibit featuring runaway slave advertisements, as well as ads regarding auctions and detainees, will open with a reception on Sunday, January 26, 2025, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Mercer University, the Spencer B. King Jr. Center for Southern Studies, and the Department of Africana Studies, in conjunction with The Tubman African Museum, presents the new exhibit "Freedom Seekers Runaway Slave Advertisements in the Macon Telegraph, 1826 – 1865."

Between 1826 and 1865, nearly every issue of the Macon Telegraph newspaper included advertisements for enslaved people: runaways, auctions, and detainees. This exhibition, which was researched and interpreted by Mercer University students, highlights the humanity of the enslaved people who are escaping bondage. In these short newspaper notices, we can see the personalities, ingenuity, skills, and resilience of Macon’s Freedom Seekers.
